Steroid creams. Everyone who suffers from eczema and who visits their health professional with complaints will sooner or later be introduced to topical corticosteroids. On the one hand, even though the itch was not curable, I was very pleased with the results of the creams. On the other hand, the product is terrible because a topical hormone cream is a symptom reliever, and in the long run not beneficial for my skin and body. Which is why I started looking for the causes of my eczema.
Yes, I still have eczema but rarely suffer from it. No, fortunately I haven’t used a hormone ointment or cream in years. Luckily, for several years I have only used natural products to treat my eczema and to take care of my body. And now the eczema can really only be seen on my dry legs. Of course, Constitutional eczema is a chronic condition, which means that you have to deal with it chronically. Meaning: you have to keep working on it. I have to be very mindful about my stress and relaxation balance.
Topical corticosteroid creams come in 4 classes. Class 1 stands for weak, class 2 for moderate, class 3 for strong, and class 4 for very strong. So if you can use a lower class or get rid of your eczema completely by adjusting your lifestyle, then that’s terrific.
Eczema is a chronic immune disease. It means that your immune system is out of balance. Your immune system overreacts and focuses on (external) factors that are actually not harmful at all. “You may be thinking: Okay – so my body is overreacting to stimuli, but what am I going to do now to reduce my use of hormone cream?”
The issues below can differ for everyone and often vary. First of all, it is important that you become aware of the stimuli:
- A party, no matter how nice, is a big stimulus on your immune system.
- Certain nutrients can stimulate your immune system.
- Sleep deprivation can worsen your eczema.
- Stress is disastrous for your eczema.
I could mention many other factors, however I will discuss each individual one in another blog. For now, I want to inspire you to be mindful about the above mentioned points. If you consciously consider all the different stimuli that you experience on a daily basis and analyze them, you’ll realize how much relaxation is required to create stability. “Relaxation stimuli” combats the “stress stimuli.” So chances are that your eczema will decrease the more you relax!
How does it work for me?
Here’s a personal example. I am very sensitive. After a visit to an amusement park or a drink in the evening, I won’t be able to do anything the next day. I really have to plan this kind of a trip with strategic relax-moments. Then the day after an outing I start my “rest-day” with a foot bath and a good book. That same week I schedule an appointment for a massage. Sometimes I book the appointment right before my outing. In addition to paying attention to food and skin care, the massages really keep my body in balance!
Lymphatic drainage (massage of the lymph nodes and lymphatic channels ensures that excess lymphatic fluid is drained)- I really recommend this for everyone who suffers from eczema! This has an incredibly relaxing effect on your body, but also ensures good lymph drainage, so waste products are better removed. This is a mini-detox too.
I am convinced that changing my way of life influences my eczema. By living consciously I no longer have to use a hormone ointment or steroid creams and I haven’t had an outbreak in years. Naturally, this is what I want for you too!
